Which do you choose when drinking cola: regular cola or zero-calorie cola?

Zero-calorie is an appealing term for those on a diet. If you don’t want to gain weight or want to cut down on sugar for health reasons, you’re probably choosing zero-calorie cola.

Which Cola Does an Anti-Aging Specialist Recommend: Regular or Zero-Calorie?

Regular Cola.

It may seem odd to recommend regular cola, especially when zero-calorie cola contains no sugar and still tastes sweet. But the secret behind zero-calorie cola’s sweetness lies in artificial sweeteners.

And it’s these artificial sweeteners that are why I don’t recommend diet colas.

What Types of Artificial Sweeteners Are There?

Several types of artificial sweeteners are commonly used, such as:

  • Aspartame and L-Phenylalanine compounds
  • Acesulfame K
  • Sucralose

Artificial sweeteners are cheaper and can be mass-produced, which is why many zero-calorie beverages use them.

Why Are Artificial Sweeteners a Concern?

You might wonder, “What’s wrong with artificial sweeteners?”

Artificial sweeteners are problematic because they can be addictive and dull your taste perception. As your body gets used to artificial sweetness, your sensitivity to sweetness decreases, causing you to consume more to feel satisfied.

Additionally, artificial sweeteners aren’t absorbed by the body. This can lead to abnormal sugar metabolism, making it easier to accumulate fat, which is another concern.

Can Zero-Calorie Cola Make You Gain Weight?

Studies have shown that artificial sweeteners can cause hormonal changes that promote fat storage, leading to weight gain.

For example, a study at the University of Texas compared two groups: those who drank 1-2 cans of zero-calorie cola daily and those who drank regular cola. Surprisingly, the group drinking zero-calorie cola had a 50% higher rate of weight gain!

Why Can Zero-Calorie Cola Lead to Weight Gain?

Consuming artificial sweeteners can trigger hormonal changes that lead to fat storage, causing weight gain.

It’s also reported that artificial sweeteners can increase cravings for food, which may cause an increase in calorie intake.

Some people might feel more comfortable drinking a lot of zero-calorie drinks, believing that “since it has no calories, it’s safe to drink as much as I want!” However, this can lead to overeating. Since regular cola doesn’t stimulate the same fat-storing hormones, it might actually be the better option.

Of course, if you want to lose weight healthily, it’s better not to drink either regular or zero-calorie cola. But if you must choose, I recommend sticking to regular cola.
