This patient wanted more definition in the lip line rather than a large increase in volume.
We used a soft hyaluronic acid and worked along the vermilion border first, then added a small amount to the body of the lip. Building the outline before the volume keeps the lip in proportion with the rest of the face.
At one month the swelling has settled and the shape has held. The lip has a clearer border in profile and the upper lip shows more of its natural curve.
Lip filler looks largest in the first week. We ask patients to judge the result at one month, once the tissue has settled.
Pain, swelling, redness, and bruising are common for the first three to seven days. Lips swell more than other areas.
Lumps or irregularity may be felt for several weeks and usually soften.
Asymmetry can occur and may need adjustment.
Cold sores can be triggered in patients who carry the virus.
Hyaluronic acid is absorbed over time, typically six to twelve months in the lips. Repeat treatment is needed to maintain the result.
Very rarely, injection into a blood vessel can impair blood flow and cause skin necrosis.
Infection is uncommon.
