Breast Reduction and Lift

This patient had physical symptoms rather than an aesthetic complaint. The weight of the breasts pulled on her shoulders and back, bra straps cut into the skin, and the fold underneath stayed damp.

We removed excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin, then repositioned the nipple and areola to sit on the new breast mound. Reduction without a lift leaves the breast flat and low, so the two are performed as one operation.

One month after surgery the volume is reduced and the breast sits higher on the chest. Shoulder and back symptoms usually ease within the first few weeks.

Scars follow the areolar border and the natural fold. They are red at this stage and fade over the following year.

Swelling, bruising, and tightness last two to four weeks.

Scars are permanent. They run around the areola and along the breast fold, and take about a year to fade.

Nipple sensation may be reduced or lost, sometimes permanently.

Breastfeeding may not be possible after this operation.

Asymmetry in size, shape, or nipple position can occur and may need revision.

Delayed wound healing at the junction of the incisions is not unusual.

Infection, hematoma, and partial loss of the nipple blood supply are uncommon but serious when they occur.
