Material was distributed through the body of the lip rather than concentrated at the vermilion border, an approach that avoids the sharply outlined appearance some patients want to steer away from. The image records the state immediately after injection, when swelling is at its height. The final shape becomes apparent after roughly two weeks. Patients with a history of cold sores are given antiviral cover, as lip injection can trigger a recurrence.

Firm swelling of both lips is at its height in the first two days and usually gone by the end of the week, though one side may settle faster than the other. Puncture sites can bruise. An outbreak of cold sores is possible where the virus is already present. As the gel integrates over two to three weeks small irregularities generally soften, and persistent lumps can be dissolved. Interruption of blood flow in a lip artery is rare and urgent.
