Abdominal etching is not simply fat removal. Fat is taken selectively along the linea alba and the tendinous intersections so that the muscle pattern underneath reads through the skin, while fat is left in the surrounding areas to keep the result looking natural. Ultrasound loosens the fat first, which allows this level of control. The photograph is three months after surgery, once swelling has fully resolved and the definition has settled. The result depends as much on the patient’s existing muscle definition as on the fat removed, since the technique reveals the anatomy underneath rather than creating it.

Bruising covers much of the abdomen for two to three weeks, and swelling shifts downward before resolving over two to three months, with numbness and a soreness resembling hard exercise. A compression garment is worn continuously as instructed. Grooves that look too deep, unevenness between the sides, firm scar tissue under the skin, or loose skin can persist, and correction is sometimes needed. Seroma and infection are uncommon. Fat embolism and deep vein thrombosis are very rare.
