The formulation is dissolved and administered into either arm over approximately 30 minutes.
Depending on your condition and treatment plan, treatment may be continued approximately once every two weeks to once a month.
Possible treatment-related effects include discomfort when the IV needle is inserted and bruising around the treatment site.
Some clients may also experience discomfort along the vein during the infusion. Other possible effects include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or abdominal pain, and temporary symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or a rise in blood pressure.
Urine, stool, or sweat may temporarily appear blue to green for several days after treatment. During treatment, methylene blue may cause falsely low pulse oximeter (SpO2) readings, and there is a risk of extravasation (leakage of the solution outside the vein).
Methylene Blue IV Drips are not provided to clients with G6PD deficiency, those taking certain antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or those with severe renal impairment.
Possible methylene blue drug interactions should be reviewed with your physician before treatment. A G6PD blood test is required before the first treatment.
