Reduction surgery was performed for both size and symmetry, with tissue removed and the nipple repositioned to sit correctly on the reshaped breast. Planning is done standing, because the position that matters is the one the patient lives in rather than the one on the operating table. One month has passed at the point this picture was taken. Swelling has largely gone and the new proportion is clear, but the scars are at their most noticeable stage now and will flatten and pale over the following year. Sensation around the nipple can be reduced in the early months and usually returns. Support garments are worn continuously through the first six weeks.

Swelling, bruising, and soreness of the breasts last one to two weeks, and a supportive bra is worn continuously for longer. Wound edges around the areola sometimes separate slightly and heal with dressings over several weeks. Scars are permanent, staying red before they soften over a year, and can thicken. Nipple sensation may be reduced or lost, and breastfeeding afterwards cannot be assured. Size or shape may differ between sides. Bleeding, infection, and rare circulation problems of the nipple are recognized.
