  • What is CO2 Laser (Mole and Wart Removal)?

CO2 laser treatment is a procedure that uses a carbon dioxide laser device to remove moles, skin tags, and warts through targeted laser treatment.
The CO2 laser treatment reacts with water contained in the targeted cells, generating heat energy. This principle is used for mole, skin tag, and wart removal treatment. By precisely targeting raised moles, skin tags, and warts that contain high moisture levels, the water inside evaporates, removing the tissue that forms these skin growths. The area where the skin growth was located forms new skin through cell turnover, blending with the surrounding skin and becoming less noticeable.

  • Pinpoint Irradiation Treatment that Minimizes Skin Damage

The CO2 laser treatment allows for precise targeting of moles, skin tags, and warts. As a result, the heat impact is minimized, and treatment can be performed with minimal damage to normal skin tissue surrounding the irradiated area. The laser's vaporizing effect only affects the skin's surface and doesn't reach deeper layers, unlike some aggressive skin tag removal devices or tools.
Additionally, blood vessels around the laser treatment irradiation site coagulate due to the thermal coagulation effect, resulting in less bleeding compared to using other skin tag or mole removal methods that use a scalpel for incision.
CO2 laser treatment uses local anesthesia, but for a few moles, skin tags, or warts, the procedure finishes in seconds, so some patients choose not to use anesthesia. Post-procedure pain is also minimal, making this treatment method recommended for those undergoing mole, skin tag, or wart removal for the first time.

  • Minimal Downtime and Less Noticeable Scarring

CO2 laser treatment has the advantage of shorter downtime and less noticeable scarring compared to mole, skin tag removal using an electric scalpel. However, the length and severity of downtime vary depending on the condition of the skin growth. For small warts, redness subsides and healing occurs within days, while moles may have redness that continues for 1-3 months after the scab falls off. In cases where pigmentation remains, additional treatments may be necessary.
At BIANCA CLINIC in Japan, we focus on minimizing downtime after mole, wart, and skin tag removal procedures. We perform thorough diagnosis of the affected area and are conscious of providing pinpoint irradiation to moles, skin tags, and warts without applying excessive heat.

TREATMENT PROCESS

  • Face Washing/Makeup Removal

For facial wart removal treatment or other facial irradiation, you'll need to wash your face and remove makeup before CO2 laser treatment. On the day of treatment, please avoid heavy makeup and come with light makeup if possible.

  • Doctor's Examination/Counseling

The doctor examines the condition of moles, skin tags, or warts. Using dermoscopy and VISIA, the affected area and skin condition are checked in detail. During counseling, feel free to ask about any concerns regarding CO2 laser treatment, costs, etc. We will explain the treatment details, and if you agree, we'll start the procedure.

FAQ

Q How long does the CO2 laser treatment procedure take?
A

While it varies depending on the size of moles, skin tags, or warts, the procedure time is approximately 5-10 minutes per area. However, if the irradiation area is large, it may take about 30 minutes. Including anesthetic procedures, it may take 1-2 hours in some cases. Please come with plenty of time for your procedure.

Q Are there risks or side effects with CO2 laser treatment?
A

Scabs will form after treatment, but these are temporary and gradually become less noticeable in most cases. Although CO2 laser treatments are considered to have few risks or side effects, redness, indentation, pigmentation, and keloids may occur after treatment.

Q What precautions should I take after CO2 laser treatment?
A

If the treated area becomes dry after mole, wart, or skin tag removal, it may not heal properly. To prevent scarring and pigmentation, be sure to follow these three care instructions:
● Moisturize
● Protect from sun exposure
● Avoid irritating the treated area
Keep the protective tape on the treated area for about 2 weeks and do not remove it until instructed by your doctor, unlike some skin tag removal methods that suggest immediate removal.
Also, avoid alcohol and intense exercise during downtime. It is advisable to avoid saunas and long baths on the day of the procedure, and only take showers. Face washing is possible from the day of the procedure, but keep the tape on the treated area and avoid strong stimulation.

Q When can I apply makeup after CO2 laser treatment?
A

Areas other than the irradiated site can be made up from the day of the procedure. For the irradiated area, apply makeup carefully without irritating the tape while it's protecting the area. Always apply sunscreen to the treated area after the tape has been removed.

Q When is CO2 laser treatment not recommended?
A

Please refrain from CO2 laser treatment if you fall under any of the following categories:
● Pregnant or breastfeeding
● Have dermatitis symptoms
● Have a keloid constitution
● Have sunburn (or are planning to tan)
● Have large moles or warts and are recommended for excision surgery based on examination

Q What types of moles are suitable for CO2 laser removal?
A

CO2 laser treatment is particularly effective for dark moles and raised moles. On the other hand, it is not suitable for large, deep moles. As a guideline, moles under 5mm or raised dark spots (seborrheic keratosis) are appropriate for CO2 laser treatment. Larger moles with deeper roots are better suited for incision surgery. In such cases of large moles, insurance coverage may apply at general dermatology clinics.

Q Is it necessary to have multiple treatments for mole removal, wart removal, or skin tag removal?
A

For deep-rooted moles, they may resurface as skin turnover occurs, so it may be necessary to remove them over several sessions. Please consult with your doctor about the number of visits and treatment costs.
