Hello everyone, this is Dr. Hime.
In our popular double eyelid series, today I would like to discuss puffiness around the eyes.
There are four main reasons why the eyes may appear puffy:
- Skin is Stretched and Sagging This symptom is particularly common among those who originally have single eyelids. By using eyelid tape (commonly known as “Aipuchi”) every day, the skin gradually sags. When not using the tape, the stretched skin covers the eyes, making the eye area look puffy. For those experiencing this, undergoing double eyelid suturing can help achieve a clearer eye appearance.
- Weak Eye Opening If you have symptoms of ptosis (drooping eyelids), it can make it difficult to open your eyes, causing them to appear thick and puffy. The likelihood of this increases with age, so if you feel your eyes have become more puffy compared to before, this could be the reason. To improve this, ptosis surgery is recommended.
- Eyelids Themselves Are Heavy Heavy eyelids are not only caused by excessive fat. The ROOF, orbicularis oculi muscle, orbital fat, and other tissues contribute to the heaviness of the eyelids. If you want to reduce the volume of orbital fat, a method involving extracting fat through a small incision of about 2mm is used. ROOF resection requires larger incisions, such as those made under the eyebrows. Since the results are unpredictable until fat or ROOF is removed, if you really want to reduce volume, it is better to start with fat removal from orbital fat, which results in fewer scars.
- Eyes Themselves Are Small Even if the eyelids are not heavy, if the eyes themselves are small, they can give a puffy impression. For the vertical length of the eyes, double eyelid suturing or cutting methods are suitable. For the horizontal width, options include inner corner incision, outer corner incision, or glamorous line formation.
If puffy eyes are a concern, it’s very important to determine the underlying cause. Please schedule a consultation so we can identify the cause together. We look forward to assisting you.
