Hello everyone,
This is Dr. Hime from BIANCA.

Today, I’ll discuss tranexamic acid, a treatment highly recommended in dermatology and aesthetic dermatology for addressing dark spots and melasma.

When it comes to beauty supplements, vitamins like vitamin C are the basics. Unlike over-the-counter vitamins available at drugstores, tranexamic acid is a prescription medication, making it slightly more challenging to obtain. Some may feel it’s unnecessary or want to skip it if possible.

However, tranexamic acid is clinically proven to be effective for dark spots and melasma, making it one of the top oral medications we recommend. Let’s explore why it’s so effective.

How Tranexamic Acid Works on Dark Spots and Melasma

Melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots, is produced by cells called melanocytes. Tranexamic acid inhibits the activity of melanocytes by suppressing a substance called prostaglandins, which are crucial for activating melanocytes. This inhibition reduces melanin production and prevents the formation of dark spots.

In addition to its effect on melanocytes, tranexamic acid has an anti-plasmin action, which helps reduce inflammation. This is why it’s sometimes prescribed for conditions like sore throats caused by colds to reduce throat inflammation.

Similarly, it can help with skin inflammation, making it effective for individuals with redness due to skin irritation.

Can Everyone Take Tranexamic Acid Orally?

Tranexamic acid suppresses the activity of plasmin, a substance that breaks down blood clots, slightly shifting the blood toward clotting.

Although the standard dosage of 500 mg/day for aesthetic purposes is unlikely to cause blood coagulation issues, it’s best to avoid oral tranexamic acid if you’re taking medications like oral contraceptives (the pill) or have other factors that predispose you to blood clotting.

What If You Can’t Take Tranexamic Acid Orally?

In such cases, tranexamic acid can be applied topically. Topical application allows you to enjoy its benefits without affecting blood coagulation.
