Do you think aging is inevitable and beyond your control?
In fact, the current standard view is that aging speed can be managed and influenced. Let’s take a closer look.

Aging Speed Is Different for Everyone

Have you ever met classmates you haven’t seen in years and felt that some look surprisingly youthful, while others seem to have aged a lot?

This difference comes from chronological age and biological age.
Even if two people are the same age, their aging speed can be completely different.

Large-scale aging research based on the famous Dunedin Study (published in 2020) also showed that aging progresses at very different rates among individuals.

In this study, more than 1,000 people born in 1972 were followed from age 26 to 45. Researchers measured physical function, dental health, cholesterol levels, and many other indicators to calculate how much their biological age increased each year.

The results were striking:
some people aged only 0.4 years per year, while others aged more than 2 years per year.

On average, people aged about 1.2 years biologically per calendar year, meaning aging progresses steadily from a young age, even if we don’t notice it.

The Relationship Between Aging Speed and Appearance

So how does aging speed affect how we look?

According to the Dunedin Study, people with faster aging speed at age 45 were more likely to be perceived as looking older than their actual age.

In other words, appearance is more closely related to biological age than chronological age.
People who age faster tend to look older, while those who age more slowly often maintain firmer skin and a healthier physique.

If you want to look younger and stay beautiful longer, aiming to reduce your biological age is key.

Environment Plays a Bigger Role Than Genetics in Lifespan

Some people think longevity is purely genetic:
“My family lives long,” or “My family tends to be short-lived.”

While genetic diseases do exist, research shows that environmental and lifestyle factors have a much greater impact on lifespan than genetics.

A Danish twin study compared causes of death in nearly 3,000 pairs of identical and fraternal twins born between 1870 and 1900. Even twins with identical genes had different lifespans depending on their life environment.

The results showed that:

  • About 25% of deaths were mainly influenced by genetics
  • About 75% were influenced by environmental factors

Moreover, among those who died before age 60, very few deaths were linked primarily to genetics.

This means that your daily habits and lifestyle can significantly affect how long—and how well—you live.

Aging Speed Can Be Controlled: Lifestyle Tips to Slow It Down

Aging is influenced by a complex mix of genetics and lifestyle. While you can’t change your genes, you can change your habits.

By improving daily behaviors, aging speed can be controlled to a certain extent.

People who age more slowly tend to:

  • Eat balanced, nutritious meals
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get sufficient, high-quality sleep

On the other hand, major factors associated with accelerated aging include:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity

Avoiding these is also crucial for healthy aging.

The Goal Is Longevity: Living Long, Healthy, and Happy

Globally, the idea that “aging is a disease that can be treated” is becoming mainstream.

As a result, the focus is shifting toward longevity, which means living a long life in good health while enjoying life.

How you live today shapes your future self.
Adopting habits that slow aging from a young age is the first step toward true longevity.
