What is a Jaw Prosthesis?
A Jaw prosthesis procedure involves making an incision inside the mouth and inserting a silicone implant into the chin, refining the chin tip and jawline. It is suitable for those concerned about protruding lips (maxillary protrusion), receding chin (retrognathia), or who wish to achieve a more refined facial profile.
The prosthesis is a medical-grade silicone implant with properties similar to human cartilage. It is durable, resistant to deformation or deterioration, and widely used in plastic surgery. Although some people imagine implants may feel unnatural or foreign, in reality, they result in a natural feel and appearance with minimal discomfort. -
Small Incision, Minimal Visible Scarring
Jaw prosthesis surgery involves an intraoral incision, not an external cut, so scars are not visible. Patients who wish to keep their procedure discreet can undergo treatment with peace of mind.
The incision is only about 2–3 cm long, minimizing postoperative swelling and bruising. Even when opening the mouth widely, scars remain barely noticeable. Furthermore, oral tissue heals faster than many other parts of the body, reducing downtime.
[Postoperative Care Instructions (After Jaw Prosthesis Insertion)]
● Shower: Below the neck only on the day of surgery; full shower from the next day. Keep fixation tape dry for 3 days. Hair washing allowed from the next day; bathing from day 3.
● Face Washing: Wipe-clean only on the day of surgery; normal washing from the next day.
● Makeup: Allowed from the next day. Do not remove tape for 3 days.
● Tooth Brushing: Possible if avoiding the wound. Avoid exaggerated mouth movements (“i” and “u” sounds).
※ Gargle with iodine solution for one week to keep the incision clean.
● Avoid opening the mouth widely or pulling the lower lip.
● Avoid puckering lips (no straw use).
● Avoid facial massage, dental treatment, or sleeping face-down for 1 month.
● Avoid alcohol, long baths, and vigorous exercise for 1 week.
● No smoking for 1 month. -
Prosthesis Removal is Also Available
At BIANCA, we also offer removal of Jaw prostheses, including those inserted at other clinics. Removal may be necessary if results differ from expectations, or if deformation, shifting, or mobility occurs. Particularly in cases of pain, swelling, or suspected infection, immediate removal is required.
Silicone prostheses generally do not deform or deteriorate unless subjected to severe trauma. At BIANCA, we carefully manage risks of infection during insertion.
If the size of the prosthesis does not match, removal and replacement are possible. As removal is also performed intraorally, scarring is hardly visible.

Treatment Benefits
-
Achieve a Beautiful Jawline and E-line
Custom-made silicone blends naturally, refining the jawline and creating a balanced profile.
-
Insertion from Inside the Mouth Minimizes Scarring
Since the incision is made intraorally, scars are barely visible.
-
Long-Lasting Effect with One Surgery
Silicone prostheses do not deform or resorb, providing long-term results.

Design
Based on consultation and overall facial balance, a custom prosthesis is designed. Using 3D simulation (VECTRA®), the doctor visualizes the ideal line, supported by palpation, CT, and X-rays to determine shape and thickness. Adjustments are made from pre-made options or semi-custom prostheses for precision.

FAQ
- Q How long does pain last after Jaw prosthesis surgery? Are there ways to relieve it?
-
A
Pain generally subsides within a week. Antibiotics and pain medication are prescribed.
- Q Are there risks of infection or sensory changes?
-
A
While prostheses are made of low-risk material, infection is still possible. Other risks include wound dehiscence, difficulty opening the mouth, or allergic reactions. Minor nerve damage may cause temporary or permanent numbness in the chin or lips, but experienced plastic surgery specialists minimize these risks, and numbness usually resolves over time.
- Q Can bone resorption occur after Jaw prosthesis insertion?
-
A
Continuous pressure may cause some physiological bone resorption. However, if the implant is well-fitted, adverse effects are extremely rare. Poorly fitted implants may cause localized resorption.
- Q Is follow-up required after prosthesis insertion?
-
A
Yes. Visits at 1–2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months are recommended.
- Q Can Jaw prosthesis improve sleep apnea?
-
A
While not a direct treatment, mild obstructive sleep apnea caused by retrognathia may improve as airway space increases. Results vary and improvement is not guaranteed.
- Q Does it affect orthodontics or dental treatment?
-
A
If braces are placed on the outer side of lower teeth, wound healing may be affected. Surgery is preferable after orthodontic completion. Surgery is possible if 2–3 fingers’ width of mouth opening is available.
- Q Is 3D simulation (VECTRA®) possible?
-
A
Yes. We use simulations to confirm expected results before surgery.
- Q Can X-ray, CT, or MRI scans be done after prosthesis insertion?
-
A
Yes, they can be performed safely, though the prosthesis will appear on imaging.
