What is Art Makeup Removal?
Art makeup removal is a procedure that breaks down and removes pigments embedded in the skin using a medical-grade laser device. While art makeup typically fades over 1 to 3 years due to natural skin turnover, it can linger for years. As a result, more clients now seek removal due to fading, design changes, or discomfort with the shape.
Other removal makeup methods include chemical treatments, surgical excision, and correction through retouching, but laser treatment is currently the mainstream approach due to its relatively low risk and high safety. The laser breaks the pigment particles into finer pieces, which are then expelled naturally through the body’s metabolism. -
Using the Medical Laser Device “PicoSure”
For art makeup removal, we use the medical-grade picosecond laser device “PicoSure®.” PicoSure is an advanced laser developed by Cynosure, a U.S. medical laser equipment manufacturer, and is a representative device in the field of picosecond lasers, which emit pulses at one-trillionth of a second.
It is approved by the U.S. FDA for a wide range of treatments, including tattoo and art makeup removal, as well as for spots, melasma, acne scars, and wrinkles. It is highly regarded for both its safety and effectiveness.
At BIANCA CLINIC, we adjust the laser output according to the treatment method—low output for Korean-style removal and high output for physician-performed removal—allowing us to provide tailored treatment depending on the pigment and skin condition. -
Differences from Q-Switched Laser Art Makeup Removal
Q-switched lasers are another type of device used in art makeup removal. However, because they destroy ink particles through heat, they can cause burns at the treated area, leading to downtime such as redness and swelling. In contrast, PicoSure breaks down pigment using shock waves rather than heat. This results in finer pigment particles that are more easily absorbed and expelled by the body, offering higher removal makeup efficacy.
Additionally, conventional lasers only respond to black pigment, requiring alternative methods for colorful tattoos or art makeup. PicoSure, on the other hand, can effectively target a wide range of colors that were previously difficult to treat.
PicoSure also features significantly shorter pulse durations compared to Q-switched lasers, minimizing thermal damage to the skin and reducing downtime after treatment. As a result, the total treatment period is roughly half that of conventional lasers.
-
Downtime after Art Makeup Removal
While it varies by individual, redness and mild swelling may occur for several days following treatment.
Treatment Benefits
-
Gentle yet effective pigment removal with medical-grade PicoSure
We use the medical-grade picosecond laser PicoSure, which crushes pigment while minimizing thermal damage to the skin, delivering high removal makeup efficacy.
-
Customizable laser settings based on pigment type and depth
The response varies depending on pigment type and how deeply it is embedded. We finely adjust the laser settings for each case to achieve optimal removal makeup results.
-
Shorter downtime compared to conventional methods
PicoSure minimizes skin damage by breaking down pigment without heat, reducing redness and swelling. Compared to traditional methods, downtime is shorter and recovery is faster.

Aftercare
Makeup can be applied from the following day after the procedure. To minimize the risk of pigmentation, avoid stimulating the treated area. When washing your face or applying skincare, do so gently and ensure thorough moisturization. Additionally, protect the area from sun exposure, as UV rays may cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

FAQ
- Q When is it safe to put on makeup again after removing it?
-
A
Makeup can be applied from the same day. However, if your skin feels irritated, wait until the area has calmed down and use gentle cosmetics.
- Q Will there be swelling or redness after the procedure?
-
A
It varies by individual. Swelling may last from a few days up to a week. Redness can persist for several weeks to a few months but will subside over time. If symptoms persist, please contact us.
- Q Will scabs form after Pico laser removal?
-
A
Pico laser treatment causes minimal skin damage, so scabbing is unlikely. Pigment will gradually fade over about a month.
- Q When can I shower or take a bath after the procedure?
-
A
You may shower on the same day. Be sure to keep the treated area clean. Baths are permitted from the next day.
- Q When can I resume exercise after treatment?
-
A
As long as you avoid direct stimulation to the treated area, there are no specific restrictions on exercise.
- Q When can I drink alcohol or smoke after the procedure?
-
A
Both may affect blood flow and worsen inflammation. Please avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 48 hours, and continue to refrain until any redness or swelling subsides.
- Q Can I undergo the procedure if I have sunburn?
-
A
Sunburned skin is more sensitive and at higher risk during laser treatment. Please wait until your sunburn has healed. After treatment, strict sun protection is essential.
- Q Does the procedure hurt?
-
A
The Korean-style method uses low output, so pain is minimal. The physician-performed procedure uses higher output with anesthesia. While discomfort is reduced, you may still feel a snapping sensation similar to a rubber band.
- Q Can pigment darken after removal?
-
A
With the Korean-style method, pigment darkening is rare. However, depending on the pigment type, some colors may shift (e.g., brown to orange) or remain partially. With the physician-performed method, temporary darkening may occur, but this fades gradually with the skin’s turnover. We monitor your progress and perform additional sessions if needed.
- Q Can I have new art makeup applied immediately after removal makeup?
-
A
You must wait until the skin has fully healed—at least four weeks. We will advise you based on the doctor’s assessment.
