Study Overview
From 2005 to 2009, 125 Japanese patients underwent this procedure to address concerns about a vertically narrow palpebral aperture or an up-slanting appearance of the lower eyelid. The surgery involved removing 4 to 6 mm of subciliary skin from the lower eyelid (focusing on the outer third to two-thirds) and shortening the lower eyelid retractors. This technique was carefully performed to avoid touching the middle layer of the eyelid.
Results
The procedure successfully lowered the up-slanting lower eyelid margin, enlarging the lateral part of the eye in all cases. Most patients reported satisfying cosmetic results, and complications were minimal. Only three patients experienced minor issues (2.4 percent), including temporary lagophthalmos and entropion, which resolved within a month. Eight patients needed revision surgeries for undercorrection.
