A New Non-Opioid Option for Postoperative Pain Management

We are pleased to introduce JOURNAVX® (suzetrigine) 50 mg, a new non-opioid oral medication for the management of moderate to severe acute pain in adults, including pain following surgery.
JOURNAVX was approved by the U.S. FDA in January 2025 and represents a new approach to acute pain management.
What is JOURNAVX®?
JOURNAVX is a non-opioid oral pain medication containing suzetrigine.
What makes JOURNAVX different is the way it works. Rather than acting on opioid receptors in the brain and central nervous system, suzetrigine selectively inhibits a sodium channel called NaV1.8, which is found primarily in peripheral sensory nerves involved in transmitting pain signals.
In simple terms, JOURNAVX works by reducing the transmission of pain signals before they reach the brain, targeting pain closer to its peripheral source.
Why Is It Relevant After Surgery?
Acute postoperative pain can vary significantly depending on the procedure and the individual.
JOURNAVX was evaluated in two large Phase 3 clinical studies involving more than 2,000 adults with moderate to severe acute pain, including patients recovering from abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and bunion surgery.
In both studies, JOURNAVX demonstrated significantly greater overall pain reduction over 48 hours compared with placebo. In the abdominoplasty study in particular, JOURNAVX produced a 47% reduction in pain levels over the 48-hour treatment period, compared with 31% with placebo.
Importantly, the studies did not establish JOURNAVX as superior to hydrocodone/acetaminophen. Its significance lies in providing physicians with an additional non-opioid option for managing acute postoperative pain.
When Does It Start Working?
In the abdominoplasty clinical study, the median time until patients first perceived pain relief was approximately 34 minutes, while the median time to meaningful pain relief was approximately 119 minutes.
Individual response may vary, and JOURNAVX should always be used according to a physician’s instructions.
How Is JOURNAVX Taken?
According to the U.S. prescribing information, the standard recommended regimen begins with 100 mg, equivalent to two 50 mg tablets, taken on an empty stomach.
If pain continues, the subsequent recommended dose is 50 mg 12 hours later, followed by 50 mg every 12 hours as needed.
Because JOURNAVX is intended for acute pain, treatment should be kept to the shortest appropriate duration. Use beyond 14 days has not been studied.
Your BIANCA doctor will determine the appropriate dosage and number of tablets according to your surgery, medical history and postoperative condition.

Important Safety Information
- Please speak with your BIANCA CLINIC doctor to determine whether JOURNAVX is appropriate for you.
- JOURNAVX is approved by the U.S. FDA but is currently not approved in Japan. At BIANCA CLINIC, it is handled under physician supervision in accordance with applicable regulations. Individual suitability, dosage and treatment duration are determined by the treating physician.
- JOURNAVX is a prescription medication and should only be used under medical supervision. Patients should inform their doctor about all medications and supplements they are taking. JOURNAVX must not be used together with certain strong CYP3A inhibitors, and grapefruit or grapefruit-containing products should be avoided while taking the medication.
- Dose adjustment or additional precautions may also be necessary in patients with liver impairment or those taking certain medications. Some hormonal contraceptives may also be affected.
- Reported adverse reactions include itching, muscle spasms, increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels and rash. Safety data regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding remain limited.
